Ophthalmologist with an interest in: Cataract Surgery, Refractive Surgery (LASIK), Corneal Disorders, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy
Dr Lee Hung Ming is the medical director and senior consultant at Asia Pacific Eye Centre, Gleneagles Hospital.
He was previously head and senior consultant of the Refractive Surgery Service at Tan Tock Seng Hospital; clinical director and senior consultant of the Vision Correction Centre at the National University Hospital; deputy director of the Eye Institute, National Healthcare Group (NHG); and adjunct professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at University Science Malaysia.
Dr Lee graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1989 and a Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 1995. He holds fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.
After completing surgical training in ophthalmology in Singapore, he undertook fellowship training in cornea, external eye diseases, and refractive surgery in Canada. His clinical interests include refractive surgery (LASIK, SMILE, and advanced surface ablation), ICL surgery, small incision cataract surgery with advanced intraocular lenses, and cornea and external eye diseases.
Dr Lee has been among the first to perform several surgical techniques in Singapore and the region. His work includes wavefront-guided LASIK with iris tracking technology in 2003, bladeless LASIK surgery in 2004, phakic IOL implant (verisyse lens) surgery in 2004, and ICL surgery in 2005. He has also been involved in IntraCor surgery for presbyopia treatment in South East Asia in 2007, femtosecond-assisted corneal transplant in Asia in 2007, and laser-assisted bladeless cataract surgery via femtosecond laser in Singapore in 2012.
He has contributed to teaching, research, and surgical training across Asia-Pacific, including developing a masters teaching program at the University Science Malaysia. He has received awards for his contributions to surgical education, including the ACE Award by the Asia-Pacific Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery and the International Gold Medal from the Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of India.
During his earlier years, Dr Lee was a state badminton player in Malaysia. He moved to Singapore under the ASEAN Scholarship and represented NUS in multiple sports, including captaining the NUS badminton team. He also served as president of the Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) at King Edward VII Hall, receiving the hall’s “Mr KEVIIan” award for leadership and sporting achievements.
